Grant Funds Expected to Be Allocated Today

The City Council is expected to allocate $1.1 million in community development block grant funds today.
The funds, which are given to the city by the federal government, will be awarded to capital improvement projects and public services organizations.
This year, 20 nonprofit organizations submitted applications for funding. The city’s Community Services Commission reviewed the applications and will recommend to the council today) that 16 of those requests, totaling $166,800, be granted. The commission suggests that Irvine Adult Day Health Center receive the largest single grant of $34,000.
The city’s Planning Commission also is recommending $722,800 to fund capital improvement projects. This money will be used to install wheelchair ramps to bring public facilities into compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act and to provide affordable housing for low-income families.
The remaining $222,000 will pay for salaries of city staff who oversee the community development block grant program and certain city services it funds.
