The school board has appointed an interim superintendent to run the 9,000-student elementary and intermediate district starting June 1.
Barbara DeHart, an administrator for the Westminster School District since 1993, will take over the post vacated after a school board majority agreed earlier this month to buy out the last two years of the previous superintendent’s contract for $163,000.
DeHart was appointed in a closed session. Board members Michael J. Verrengia, Sondra Rinker and Helena Rutkowski voted for the appointment; Nancy L. Blumenthal and Lynn Covey were opposed.
The board had split the same way when it voted May 6 to end Gail Wickstrom’s term as superintendent.
A district spokeswoman, Barbara Hoopes, said that the school board will discuss DeHart’s salary Tuesday. No date has been set yet for when a permanent successor will be chosen.
DeHart takes over as the district faces several crucial issues, including management of the state’s class-shrinking plan for primary grades and how to handle bilingual education.
