SEAL BEACH — Los Alamitos advanced to the second round of the Division I boys’ tennis playoffs with a 12-6 victory over Capistrano Valley on Tuesday at Old Ranch Tennis Club.
Capistrano Valley (17-4), whose only losses this season were to top-10 teams, was outmatched early, as Los Alamitos (18-1) took a 5-1 lead after the first round. The Griffins went on to win seven of nine doubles matches, including a sweep by Samir Vora and Ed Huang, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, 6-2. In singles, Cody Jackson swept, 6-1, 6-4, 6-0.
“A big part of the match was us coming out strong,” Los Alamitos Coach Geoff Carter said. “For them to travel out here and lose six of the first seven matches is tough to come back mentally. But I think we are the better team individually and collectively. This is a big statement for us. We have been under-ranked all season.”
Los Alamitos will play top-seeded Woodbridge, the only team to defeat them this season and the same team that eliminated the Griffins in the second round last year.
