Off the track: The Northridge Open track and field meet, which was scheduled for Saturday at Cal State Northridge, has been canceled.
Don Strametz, men’s and women’s track coach at Northridge, said that an abundance of college track meets being held this weekend, including the championships of the Pacific 10, Big West and Western Athletic conferences, made it difficult to attract a significant number of Southern California competitors.
Family ties: Darian Chappell of Camarillo and her father, Bob Chappell of Salinas, defeated Gilbert and Monica Rincon of Detroit, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3), Sunday to win the United States Tennis Assn. National Father-Daughter Indoor Championships at the Queens City Racquet Club in Cincinnati.
The Chappells are currently the nation’s No. 1-ranked father-daughter team. Darian is a senior at Camarillo High.
Island Waves: Craig Gamble, a 6-foot-4 outside hitter from Punahou High in Hawaii, has committed to Pepperdine. Gamble is a high school teammate of Scott Wong, who signed with the Waves earlier in the recruiting season.
Pepperdine also received a commitment from Richard Chou, a 6-4 outside hitter from St. Francis High in Guam.
