It’s a Historical Day: Oak Park Advances

Oak Park High cured its playoff blues, advancing past the first round of the Southern Section boys’ tennis playoffs for the first time in school history with a 13-5 victory over Windward on Tuesday in a Division IV match at Oak Park.
The Eagles (12-6), who have won four consecutive Tri-Valley League titles, were led by No. 1 singles player Joey Edelberg, the Tri-Valley singles champion, who dropped just one game in three singles matches.
In other first-round matches:
Division I
Glendale 15, Thousand Oaks 3--Ji Chung swept at No. 1 singles for the unseeded Dynamiters (19-0), including a 6-3 win over Lancer No. 1 player Jeff Linneman.
Hoover 12, Camarillo 6--Danny Kim swept his matches at No. 1 singles--dropping just five games--for the Tornadoes (17-2) at Hoover.
Camarillo finished 13-6.
Division II
Burbank 17, Keppel 1--Rafi Hovanessian and Mario Covarrubias swept their singles matches for the Bulldogs (15-4).
Hart 17, La Serna 1--No. 1 Patrick Pomer and No. 2 Sar Doad each swept three singles sets for the Indians (15-2) at La Serna.
Division III
Westlake 18, Rosemead 0--Darren Joe, Alex Yaftali and Erik Janson, who play Nos. 1-3 singles, lost only four games in nine combined sets for the Warriors (19-0).
Calabasas 15, Bishop Montgomery 3--Branden Parker and Jonathan Yee lost just two games in three doubles sets for the Coyotes (16-5) at Calabasas.
Harvard-Westlake 18, Los Altos 0--Junior twins Kevin and Brian Bezonsky each swept their matches by scores of 6-0 for the Wolverines (13-5) at the Studio City Golf and Tennis Center.
City Section
Individual Championships--Sonny Warda of Kennedy, Reza Alizedah of Birmingham and Anthony Gabriele of Birmingham won at the Studio City Racquet Centre and advanced to Thursday’s singles quarterfinals.
