Highland, With a Losing Record, Advances by Winning at Glendale

Shaun Gerstl hit a two-run double to spark a four-run first inning and give Highland High, in its first playoff game since 1993, a 5-3 victory over Glendale in a Southern Section Division I wild-card game Tuesday at Glendale.

Fernando Rios had two hits for Glendale (16-9), which pulled to within 4-3 with the tying run on third base with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning but couldn’t tie the game.

The Bulldogs (12-14) took advantage of four errors by the Dynamiters.

Highland will play at fourth-seeded Servite on Friday.

Notre Dame 5, Santa Monica 2--Kevin Jerkens (6-3) scattered six hits, struck out six and had two hits for the Knights (19-8) in a Division I wild-card game at Notre Dame.

Ryan Stonerock added two hits and two RBIs for the Knights, who travel to Camarillo on Friday.

Warren 3, Saugus 0--Chris Mayberry broke Rod Murachanian’s 13-year-old school record with his 14th double of the season but the Centurions (14-11-1) hit into three double plays in a Division II wild-card game at Saugus.

Justin Babin (3-4) of Saugus allowed only two hits and struck out five in five innings, but he walked six batters and gave up all three runs.

Campbell Hall 14, Downey Calvary Chapel 1--Greg Kriegler had three hits, including two doubles, and five RBIs, and Cole James had three hits and scored three runs for the Vikings (15-11) in a Division V wild-card game at Campbell Hall.

L.A. Baptist 18, Windward 7--Tim Feirfeil (6-2) pitched five innings of two-hit relief, and the Knights (15-10) pounded out 20 hits, including four home runs, in a Division V wild-card game at L.A. Baptist.

Josh Hilliger had a two-run home run in the third inning that put the Knights ahead for good, and Jon Wada added a three-run home run in the fourth to give L.A. Baptist a 7-4 lead.

Ed Almeida and Nolan Patterson also had home runs for the Knights.

Villanova Prep 7, Milken Community 1--Ian Foutz (4-2) pitched a four-hitter, striking out five and walking three for the Wildcats (12-7) in a Division V wild-card game at Milken.

Mike McKinney and Mike Mellein each hit two-run doubles for Villanova Prep.

Milken finished 15-3.
