Bonilla and Brown Lead Marlins, 6-2

SAN DIEGO — Once again, Florida’s Bobby Bonilla and Kevin Brown were too much for the San Diego Padres.

Bonilla drove in three runs, including two on only his second homer of the season, and Brown beat the Padres for the second time in six starts, 6-2, Sunday.

Bonilla is 12 for 20 with seven runs batted in against the Padres this season. Six of the hits have been for extra bases.

“My wrist is healthy and I’m feeling a lot better,” said Bonilla, who was bothered by a sore wrist at the start of the season. “I’ve been working hard with [hitting coach] Milt May, looking at some old films, going over a lot of old things I did properly, and I’ve been swinging the bat pretty good.”

Until Sunday, Bonilla’s only homer of the season had been a grand slam at Atlanta on May 15.

He hit a two-run homer to right field on the first pitch he saw from Pete Smith with two outs in the eighth inning. Edgar Renteria was aboard on a leadoff single, which extended his hitting streak to 10 games.

“I was looking for a pitch I could drive,” Bonilla said. “I thought Pete might mess with me a little bit, and he came after me with his first pitch. I think he wanted to throw a cutter in there and try to get me to swing at his pitch, but just maybe that particular pitch didn’t do much.”

Bonilla extended his hitting streak to seven games and went seven for 12 with five RBIs as the Marlins won two of three games of this series.

“We made some horrible pitches to him,” San Diego Manager Bruce Bochy said. “He was swinging good coming in here, but we got the ball up a lot against him in this series.”

Brown (5-2), a 2-1 winner over the Padres on April 29, struck out eight and walked none in his second complete game.

“Giving up 12 hits isn’t high on my list of things to do,” said Brown, who in 10 previous starts received an averaged of only 2.8 runs from the Marlins. “I’ll take the runs and I’ll take the W, but take about half as many hits and I’ll be happy.”

Sterling Hitchcock (4-5) gave up four runs, three earned, on only four hits in seven innings for San Diego.
