Butler Hit by Line Drive in Batting Practice

Dodger outfielder Brett Butler was hit by a Raul Mondesi line drive while rounding third base during batting practice before Sunday’s 2-0 win over the Atlanta Braves.

Butler, who was knocked down, wasn’t seriously injured.

“It was kind of a funny thing,” Butler said. “I was hitting and [Todd] Hollandsworth was running in the outfield and I plucked him with the ball and guys were kind of laughing at him.

“When I finished hitting I was at first base, and I [practiced a hit-and-run play] and ‘Mondy’ hit the ball and plucked me at third base. The guys all laughed. It was like payback. I thought it was pretty funny.

“It hit me pretty hard. I went down and ran off the field like a wounded dog.”

Butler, who was placed on the disabled list May 7 because of torn cartilage in his left shoulder, threw for about 15 minutes from 110 feet. He said he’s making progress, but is uncertain when he’ll return.

Hollandsworth, who had missed four consecutive games because of a knee injury, pinch ran in the sixth inning of Saturday night’s 10-3 victory and stayed in the game to play left field.

Hollandsworth, who doubled in his only at-bat and scored a run, pinch ran for Billy Ashley again in the seventh inning of Sunday’s game and remained in the game to play left field.

Rookie infielder Wilton Guerrero made a base-running blunder after a leadoff single in the first inning. Guerrero, moving on a hit-and-run, lost track of where the ball was and rounded second when Roger Cedeno flew out to deep center. He re-touched second and barely beat the throw to first.

“This time he went back and stepped on the bag, so he’s learning,” Dodger Manager Bill Russell said. “Those are rookie mistakes.”

The Dodgers, who had at least one home run in their last seven games, failed to hit one Sunday.
