Salton Sea

The cry has once again gone out to save the Salton Sea, what with the discovery of deformed waterfowl, another grebe die-off and continued salinity increases (June 8). The Salton Sea Authority and its supporters are spending taxpayer dollars to study the problem and trying to convince the government to spend public funds to “rescue the sea.” The Salton Sea lobby apparently thinks we taxpayers are made of money, stupid, or both.
The real issue that should make every taxpayer’s blood boil is we may actually spend a substantial amount of money on preserving the Salton Sea as a place for recreation and waterfowl when the nation and the state have truly pressing problems like education, health care, transportation and crime. We must see that our elected officials prioritize the spending to projects that return the greatest benefit to society. Frankly, spending billions of dollars on the Salton Sea should be near the bottom the the list.
