Former Ventura County resident Christopher John Carrier died of a sudden illness June 17. He was 38.
Born May 13, 1959, in Hollywood, Carrier spent the first 18 years of his life in Ojai and graduated from Saint Bonaventure High School in 1977.
“He still has so many friends here,” said his mother, Ellie Carrier of Ventura.
After high school, Carrier attended Cal State Sacramento and received a degree in economics. He was employed by the California Department of Veterans Affairs for 15 years.
From the time he got his first telescope as an 8-year-old, Carrier maintained an abiding interest in the stars, his mother said.
In later years he was asked to lecture at schools in Sacramento, where he eventually settled, she said.
Carrier also was a computer buff. He developed his own computer game called “First Light,” and he developed a computer program to convert the Egyptian calendar.
He also was a freelance writer, publishing articles on computers and weather--another interest--in USA Today and newspapers in Alaska, his mother said.
Carrier is survived by his parents, Roland and Ellie Carrier, and his brother, Stephen Carrier, all of Ventura.
Private funeral services will be officiated by Pierce Brothers Griffin Mortuary in Camarillo.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Class of 1977 Scholarship Fund, Saint Bonaventure High School, 3167 Telegraph Road, Ventura, CA 93003.
