Kaplan Throws a Pair of Victories

He pitched in only one American Legion baseball game Saturday, but Adam Kaplan was victorious in two throwing events.

The senior-to-be at Monroe High won the javelin in the young men’s division (ages 17-18) at the USA Track & Field Region 16 Junior Olympic championships at Long Beach State in the morning and was the winning pitcher in Panorama City’s 10-5 victory over Burbank South in a District 20 game at Alemany High in the afternoon.

Kaplan, a right-hander, threw the javelin a personal best of 153-8 to qualify for the USATF Junior Olympic national championships at Southern University on July 22-27.

He later gave up two runs and two hits, striking out five, in five innings against Burbank South to improve to 1-1.

Sergio Franco was three for four with three runs batted in for Panorama City (9-3).

In other District 20 games:

Royal 18-11, Simi Valley 3-6--Tony Ortega hit for the cycle and drove in three runs for Royal (7-1) in the second game of a doubleheader at Simi Valley High.

Ortega hit a solo home run and teammates Matt Betancourt and Bobby Egan each had three-run homers in the third, when Royal scored seven runs to take an 8-1 lead on the way to its sixth consecutive victory.

In the first game, Brian Lipman hit a three-run home run in the second and followed with a grand slam in the fifth.

Encino 5, Central Valley 1--Mike Jackson (3-1) pitched a five-hitter, struck out 11 and walked three for Encino (7-4) at Valley College.

Tim Mathews was two for two with two RBIs for Encino.

Woodland Hills West 6, Verdugo Hills 2--Adam Sperling and Jesus Gallo combined on a three-hitter for Woodland Hills West (10-3) at El Camino Real High.

Van Nuys East 10, West Hills 7--Sean Hanrahan had two hits and three RBIs, and Jorge Piedra had two doubles and two RBIs for Van Nuys East (7-1) at Notre Dame High.

Antelope Valley North 3, Valley North 2--Mario Varela hit a home run with two out in the eighth to lift Antelope Valley North (8-3) at Chatsworth High.

Woodland Hills East 6, Van Nuys West 5--Jeff Spector doubled home Alredo Saenz with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to cap a five-run rally for Woodland Hills East (10-4) at Taft High.

North Hollywood West 5, Woodland Hills East 2--Brandon Murphy (2-1) pitched a four-hitter and struck out six for North Hollywood West (11-3) at Taft High.

San Fernando 7, Lancaster 6--Claudio Gutierrez had a two-run single in a five-run fifth for host San Fernando (3-10).

In District 16 games:

Moorpark 8-4, Newbury Park 3-3--Willy Zavala’s one-out single drove in Zack Greene with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth of the second game to give Moorpark (6-6-1) a doubleheader sweep at Moorpark College.

Zavala (3-1), who had three hits and two RBIs, also got the victory in relief, allowing three hits, striking out five and walking two in six innings.

In the first game, Paz Olson-Pacheco (3-0) threw a seven-hitter.

Camarillo B 5-7, Westlake 4-2--Mark Hensley had three hits--including a game-winning, run-scoring double in the eighth--for Camarillo B (5-9) in the first game at Camarillo High.
