Program Launched to Halt ‘Epidemic’ Use of Drug

The city has launched a $25,000 pilot program to help reduce what Mayor Pro Tem Steve Martin called the “epidemic” usage of crystal methamphetamine, also known as speed, within the gay community.
“Crystal is the poor man’s cocaine,” lowering sexual inhibitions and resulting in the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS, he said. “People sometimes use the drug for weeks without coming down. They become addicted without realizing it.”
The program is scheduled to begin Sept. 15 and will provide counseling as well as support groups for addicts.
