Repair Work Closes Lanes of 101 Freeway

Their air conditioners may not be cranked up as high as they were last week, but eastbound San Fernando Valley motorists are still dealing with a summer hassle this week.

A freeway repair project is closing three lanes of the Ventura Freeway from Balboa Boulevard in Encino to Coldwater Canyon Avenue in Studio City, according to the California Department of Transportation.

The lanes on the eastbound side of the freeway will be closed through Friday morning from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Caltrans officials say closures could sometimes last even longer.

The repairs are part of a $1-million project that began July 7, aiming to smooth out uneven patches of pavement on a 10-mile stretch that has settled since the 1994 Northridge earthquake. Work is scheduled to be completed by early October.

Patricia Reid, a Caltrans spokeswoman, said motorists should use caution when driving near the construction areas because the work causes a bumpy surface until repaving is done.

For after-hours traffic updates, call the Caltrans traffic management center between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m. at (213) 897-0340.
