World AIDS Day to Focus on Healing Power of Theater

World AIDS Day is usually commemorated in the art world through “A Day Without Art,” but this year the theater community has turned the concept around by celebrating the healing power of performance. Here’s a list of tonight’s activities:

ACT UP/Los Angeles’ 10th Anniversary Bash (Highways, 1651 18th St., Santa Monica, [213] 660-8587). Danielle Brazell, Tim Miller, Leilani Chan, Tim Bennett and other artists are slated to perform in an evening of storytelling and performance highlights to commemorate the founding of the AIDS activist organization. 8:30 p.m. $10.

Cinderella (Serendipity Theatre Company at Burbank Little Theatre, George Izay Park, 1100 W. Clark St., [818] 557-0505). The Rodgers & Hammerstein musical version of the classic with youth and adult actors. Benefit for AIDS research. 7 p.m. $12.

Jungle of Cities (City Garage, 1340 1/2 4th St. [alley], Santa Monica, [310] 319-9939). Bertolt Brecht’s version of ‘20s Chicago. All proceeds benefit AIDS Project L.A. 8 p.m. $17.50.

Kiss & Tell (Studio A, 2306 Hyperion Ave., Silver Lake, [213] 661-8311). Performance artist Michael Kearns performs a work-in-progress reading of his new solo piece, as a benefit for Caring for Babies With AIDS. 8 p.m. Pay-what-you-can donation.

Laughter Is the Best Medicine (Laugh Factory, 8001 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, [800] 88-UNTIL). Kevin Pollak, Jay Mohr, Emo Phillips, Barry Sobel, Mark Roberts, Marcie Smolin, Steve Moore, Bobby Collins, Wendy Leibman, Nolan North and Marc Price and others will perform in an all-star comedy show to benefit Until There’s a Cure Foundation. 8 p.m. $50.

Lovable Blonde Seeking . . . (Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, 2055 S. Sepulveda Blvd., West Los Angeles, [213] 965-1564). A staged reading of Pat Sawyer’s comedy about the responses a woman gets to a personal ad in which she discloses her HIV status. Presented by the Women Alive coalition for women living with HIV and AIDS. 8 p.m. $5.

When Casts Collide (Shubert Theatre, 2020 Avenue of the Stars, Century City, [800] 447-7400). Performers from “Ragtime,” “Rent” and “The Phantom of the Opera” present a concert of Broadway music to benefit AIDS charities. 7:30 p.m. $35-$75.
