Cappel Leads UCI Women Past Fairfield

Reserve Kirsten Cappel scored 16 points and had a career-high 12 rebounds as host UC Irvine beat Fairfield, 64-52, Sunday in a nonconference women’s basketball game.

Cappel made five of nine shots from the field and six of nine free throws in 24 minutes.

Megan Stafford added 12 points and six assists and Chelsea Mackey had 10 points for the Anteaters (2-1).

In other nonconference women’s basketball:

Fresno State 83, Cal State Fullerton 79--Erin Whiteside was seven of seven from the field and made six of eight free throws to finish with a team-high 20 points for visiting Fullerton (1-3). Kris Sigg added 19 points and six assists for the Titans.

Chapman 67, Cal State Hayward 55--Lyndsay Brown made eight of 11 shots and finished with 20 points and nine rebounds for host Chapman. Melissa Lopez added 16 points and Courtney Kanegae had 10 points and seven assists for the Panthers.

In the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo tournament:

UC Irvine 11, UCLA 6--Mike and Robert Allaire, Mike Foley and Greg Finley each scored two goals for UC Irvine (12-14) in the fifth-place game.

Sean Hylton, a graduate of Costa Mesa High, had a goal for USC, which won the tournament with a 5-4 victory over Stanford.

Brian Heifferon (Servite) and Crosby Grant (Corona del Mar) each had a goal for Stanford.
