Tabbed to ride Subordination in the $500,000 Hollywood Derby by trainer Gary Sciacca primarily because he already was in California for other mounts in Hollywood Park’s Turf Festival, Jerry Bailey came through with his 13th Grade I victory of 1997.
Second for the first six furlongs, Subordination, a 12-1 shot, kicked clear early in the stretch, then defeated Lasting Approval, the 9-2 favorite, to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:50 for the 1 1/8 miles on a yielding grass course.
It was the sixth victory in 10 starts on turf for the New York-based colt, who earned a trip west with a victory in the Jamaica Handicap on Oct. 19 at Belmont Park.
“He fought off so many good horses in the Jamaica that he deserved a chance to come here,” said Sciacca, who trains Subordination for owner Seth Klarman’s Klaravich Stables. “We’ve been looking forward to this race for a long time. We nominated him to it last year.”
Said Bailey: “The whole weekend was planned around Memories Of Silver [an also-ran in the Matriarch]. This mount fell into place.”
