Councilwoman to Be Named Mayor Tonight

City Councilwoman Laurann Cook is poised to become the city’s third mayor in a year.
When the gavel passes between City Council members at an annual ceremony tonight, it will go from Mayor John J. Collins to Cook, the mayor pro tem.
Collins stepped in in January when Councilman James D. Petrikin, citing health problems, resigned as mayor but stayed on the council.
The mayor presides over meetings, makes public appearances and signs paychecks but does not have more power than the rest of the council.
Cook, 48, began serving on the council in 1986; her current term expires in December 1998. The former public relations executive spends much of her time on youth causes, such as child abuse prevention.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in City Hall, 10200 Slater Ave. Information: (714) 965-4400.
