City Protests Relocation of County Welfare Office

The Hawaiian Gardens City Council has issued a formal protest against the pending relocation of the local welfare office to Rancho Dominguez.
“It will be a hardship for those who have a legitimate need for governmental assistance to travel the freeways or use public transportation to get from Hawaiian Gardens to Rancho Dominguez,” said Mayor Lupe Cabrera.
The Hawaiian Gardens office, which has been in the community for 23 years, serves about 1,700 welfare recipients, said City Administrator Jack Simpson.
The move is being made for economic reasons, said Michelle Callahan, county Department of Public Social Services spokeswoman. The new facility will be fully computerized and will reduce waiting time, she said.
Simpson said he hopes that county officials will reevaluate their plans and find a way to continue service in Hawaiian Gardens.
