Police Officers Union Appeals Court Order

Labor tensions between the Police Officers Assn. and the city escalated Wednesday as the union appealed a day-old court order aimed at preventing another round of “blue flu.”
A union representative said the appeal is directed at a part of the order that requires the organization to issue a memo warning officers against further job actions. During Monday’s shifts, 54 of 73 scheduled patrol and jail officers called in sick.
“Our problem is that the city was ordering the POA to issue this memo,” union President Richard Wright said. “We had nothing to do with police officers calling in sick.”
City Atty. Gail Hutton said the city would appeal the union’s latest move. The city also filed suit Tuesday against the union, seeking unspecified damages from Monday’s sickout. In turn, the union filed a counter suit alleging malicious prosecution by the city.
Police have been working without a contract since 1993, largely due to an impasse involving pay raises.
