Tournament Goes North Hollywood’s Way

Claudia Villa scored 19 points and Tashean Thomas added 15 for North Hollywood High, which defeated Washington, 72-55, to win the Washington girls’ basketball tournament championship Wednesday at Washington.

Thomas, who was named the tournament’s most valuable player, also had 12 steals.

Lindsay Sotero-Higa, who was named to the all-tournament team, scored 15 points and had seven assists for the Huskies (4-0).

Cleveland 61, Verdugo Hills 58--LaShanda Smiley scored seven of the Cavaliers’ 20 points in the third quarter to help Cleveland (1-1) pull away from Verdugo Hills (1-1) in a consolation game of the Eagle Rock tournament.

Smiley finished with 16 points. Teammates Mishawn Simms and Stephanie Sanders each added 11.

El Camino Real 80, Poly 52--The Conquistadores bolted to a 24-9 lead in the first quarter and never let up in a nonleague opener for both teams at El Camino Real.

Cara Blumfield scored 27 points, including eight in the first period, for El Camino Real. Chrissy McClain added 18 and Karen Shun had 16 points.

Poly’s Qicirana Jeffries scored 20 points and Jamie Jefferson added 12.

Kennedy 56, Van Nuys 45--Sophomore point guard Jovan Smith, who was called up to the varsity Wednesday, scored 23 points and had eight assists and eight steals for the Golden Cougars (1-0) in a nonconference game at Kennedy.

Lataneka Henderson scored 14 points for Van Nuys (0-2).

Palmdale 41, Upland 34--Summer Hoban had 11 points for the Falcons (1-0) in a first-round game at the Etiwanda tournament.

Grant 58, Birmingham 35--Nakeisha Perkins had 12 points and 22 rebounds for the Lancers (2-0) in a nonleague game at Grant.

Moorpark 74, Mira Costa 44--Damaris Hinojosa scored 30 points and T.C. Plante had 10 points for the Musketeers (2-0) in a Mayfair-Bellflower tournament first-round game at Bellflower High.

BOYS

Grant 88, University 50--Gilbert Arenas scored 36 points, including six three-pointers, for the Lancers in a nonconference opener at Grant.

Krishna Evans added 10 points for Grant. Arenas also had 10 rebounds and six assists.

Birmingham 58, Reseda 49--Stanley Fletcher had 20 points and 11 rebounds, and Emmanuel Evans added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Braves (1-0) in a nonconference game at Birmingham.

Kennedy 83, Van Nuys 70--Anthony Cosby had 21 points and Nana Gbewonyo added 20 points, 13 rebounds, five steals and four blocked shots for the Golden Cougars (1-0) in a nonconference game at Van Nuys.

Montclair Prep 90, Ontario Christian 54--Rocky Steryo had 30 points, Carlease Clark contributed 16 and Jed Hall had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Mounties (1-0) in a nonleague romp at Ontario Christian (0-1).

Ryan Fuqua scored 24 for the Knights.

Burroughs 70, Belmont 57--Jeremy Cartee scored 26 points and the Indians broke open a tie game in the second half of a first-round game of the Hoover-Burbank tournament at Hoover High.

Preston Tucker scored 10 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for Burroughs (0-1).

Hoover 71, Eagle Rock 47--Mark Hull had 19 points and nine rebounds for the Tornadoes (1-0) in a first-round game at the Hoover-Burbank tournament.

Crescenta Valley 78, Burbank 73--The Falcons made five of six three-point shots in the second half to help hold off Burbank in the first round of the Hoover-Burbank tournament at Burbank High.

Juni Williams scored 23 of his 24 points in the second half and Eric Rohwer, a 6-foot-9 center, had 12 blocked shots for Burbank (0-1). Crescenta Valley will play Marshall, a 70-53 winner over Glendale in the second round today.

Moorpark 76, Rio Mesa 56--Andrew Carlson had 21 points and 10 rebounds, Keith Donahue had 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists and Kevin Lawrence contributed 15 points for the Musketeers (1-0) in a nonleague game at home.

Paul Guerrero had 17 points for the Spartans (0-1).
