The Philharmonic Society of Orange County finished the 1997 fiscal year with a $1.9-million surplus. The figure includes $742,540 raised by the society’s women’s committees, about $400,000 from corporate gifts and $41,711 from government grants, in addition to operating surpluses reported in Tuesday’s Calendar. Total income for the year, including ticket sales and interest, was $5.9 million.
Harriet P. Payne, who died Monday in Orange of complications of a stroke at age 85, was a founding member of the Pacific Symphony. A violinist, composer and conductor, Payne played with the Pacific from 1978 to 1992. She also was principal violist and personnel manager for the Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach from 1979 to 1994.
