Ex-Ski Slope Fugitive Gets 16 Years for Rape

STAMFORD, Conn. — A former high school athlete who fled to the ski slopes of Europe for eight years to avoid his rape trial was sentenced Thursday to 16 years in prison for a 1986 assault on a neighbor.
Alex Kelly stared straight ahead and showed no emotion as the sentence was read.
“Bye, I love you,” Kelly mouthed to his mother, father and fiancee as he was led away from the courtroom in handcuffs.
Kelly, now 30, was denied bail while he appeals his conviction and awaits a second rape trial. He was also given 10 years’ probation and fined $10,000.
His victim, Adrienne Bak Ortolano, had urged the judge to impose the maximum sentence of 20 years.
“I have been living in constant fear since I was 16 years old,” she said, her voice cracking and tears rolling down her face.
