Newhall Saugus Rallies in Ninth

Newhall Saugus collected 22 hits and scored five runs in the ninth inning Thursday to outlast Santa Monica, 19-15, in the opening round of the Area 6 playoffs at Birmingham High.
Cody Joyce of Newhall Saugus had four hits, including a double and a home run, and two runs batted in. J.T. Stotts added four hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs, Steve Lombardi had a home run, a double and four RBIs, and Jeff Gaeta had three hits, including a double and a triple.
Ronny Reynoso of Santa Monica had four hits, including two home runs, and three RBIs.
Valley North 3, West Covina 2--Tom Morefield and Micah Berger had run-scoring doubles in the eighth inning for Valley North (26-6), which rallied from a 2-1 deficit at Birmingham High.
Morefield’s hit drove in Tim Weigand from second and Berger followed with a double to score Morefield.
Right-hander Mike Kunes (10-0), who struck out 10 while going the distance, allowed a leadoff triple to Chris Helman in the eighth, but then retired the side.
