Todd Miller of Newport Beach and Terence McNulty of San Clemente won their second-round heats Thursday to advance to the third round on the first of four days of the Katin Team Challenge surfing event on the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier.
The contest was marked by consistent three- to five-foot sets that provided good conditions. The same conditions are forecast for the rest of the week.
Today, Troy Eckert of Newport Beach, Ryan Sakal and Jeff Deffenbaugh, both of Huntington Beach, will begin competing in the third round. Many of the world’s top surfers, including Sunny Garcia, Kalani Robb and Tom Curran, will join the contest Saturday. In addition, women’s world champion Lisa Andersen will surf Saturday in the open division and will compete against the men, a first for the contest.
Competition starts at 7 a.m.
