Home Stand Gets Longer for Indians

The Cleveland Indians are in the midst of their longest home stand since 1986, but they are not making the most of it.

After a mammoth home run by Oakland’s Jose Canseco with one out in the ninth on Friday, the Indians have lost three games a row and are 2-6 on their 14-game, 13-day stand.

Canseco’s 458-foot home run with one out in the ninth inning Friday night gave Oakland a 2-1 victory.

Canseco hit a 3-2 pitch from Mike Jackson (2-2) over the center-field fence for his 21st home run.

It was the first home run given up by Jackson in 54 appearances since last Sept. 8.

Aaron Small (7-4) pitched one scoreless inning for the victory and Billy Taylor worked a perfect ninth for his 19th save.

Oakland scored a run in the first as Scott Brosius beat out a high hopper to third base, went to third on Jason Giambi’s single to left and scored when Mark McGwire hit into a force play.

Cleveland tied the score, 1-1, in the fourth. Manny Ramirez led off with a single, went to third on a hit-and-run single to right by David Justice and scored as Matt Williams grounded into a double play.

Cleveland starter Charles Nagy gave up four hits and one run over eight innings, striking out seven and walking three.
