Cal Lutheran University will get an early jump on this year’s Kwanzaa observance, with daylong festivities scheduled Dec. 6.
Kwanzaa, an African American cultural celebration created in 1966 by Maulana Karenga, chairman of the black studies department at Cal State Long Beach, takes its name from the Swahili phrase meaning “first fruits.”
The holiday is celebrated from Dec. 26 through Jan. 1, and revolves around the lighting of seven candles symbolizing the seven principles of Kwanzaa.
Cal Lutheran’s celebration will include African dance, a jazz band, a storyteller, authentic African food, and a performance by gospel singer Rozlyn Sorrell.
The event is sponsored by CLU Multicultural and International Programs, TRIO Programs, Afro-Centric Committee of Ventura County and the NAACP Saturday School.
The Kwanzaa celebration will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Preus-Brandt Forum. Admission is free. For information, call 493-3489 or 493-3151.
