Meatless Fridays

Re “Meatless Fridays Won’t Nurture Catholicism,” by William F. Buckley, Commentary, Nov. 16:
If all Christians did not eat meat on Fridays, a substantial amount of rain forest (our planet’s lungs) would be saved. Thousands of acres are cut down to raise beef and feed for beef in these environmentally essential rain forests. This land is fragile and when the soil is quickly depleted, more is cleared. If everyone cut out a trip to fast-food restaurants once a week, the effect would be profound. The devastation from fires in Indonesia (caused by people trying to clear land for cattle) makes this a necessity.
Buckley’s right in saying it may not nurture Catholicism, but it will definitely nurture the planet.
