Clark Advances in Tennis Event

Laguna Beach’s Doris Clark advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Tennis Assn. National Senior Women’s Hardcourt championships Wednesday at Newport Beach Tennis Club.
Clark, who is fourth-seeded and playing in the 65 singles division, beat Peggy Winningham (Chattanooga, Tenn.), 6-4, 6-4. Clark will face top-seeded Mary Boswell (Damascus, Md.) on Friday. Boswell easily defeated Margaret Anderson (Lake Oswego, Ore.), 6-0, 6-0.
In the other semifinal, La Jolla’s Liz Harper, seeded fifth, will face second-seeded Louise Russ (Deerfield Beach, Fla.).
In the 75 singles, Laguna Hills’ Muriel Bard advanced to Friday’s semifinals with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Jeanne Gengler (Locust Valley, N.Y.). Bard will play top-seeded Eleanor Harbula of Sylmar, a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Ilse Jobson (Normal, Ill.). La Jolla’s Dorothy Cheney, second-seeded, will play Cathedral City’s Lucy Dettmer in the other semifinal.
Bard, with partner Margery Stafford (Bass Harbor, Maine) will play in today’s 75 doubles semifinals, after defeating Carmel’s Jean Harris and Salinas’ Marian Lowe, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
