Gul Mohammed, 40, the world’s shortest man. Mohammed, who stood 22 inches tall, was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records in 1992 as the shortest man in the world. A pauper who lived in India, Mohammed had tried to run a roadside candy and biscuit stall but was often robbed because of his size. He survived on financial help from friends and voluntary organizations. He had suffered from chronic obstructive airway disease, made worse by his heavy smoking.
