Fullerton College English professor Philip Mayfield has been named Teacher of the Year by the Orange County Department of Education.
Mayfield has taught composition, critical thinking and literature for the past eight years at Fullerton College. He has taught at Santa Ana College, Orsini Srachschule in Basel, Switzerland, and the University of Houston.
As part of his award, Mayfield will receive $15,000 from the Dr. James Hines Foundation. Four teachers of elementary, junior high, middle and high schools also will be honored and given $15,000 each.
William and Sue Gross founded the foundation in 1993 and named it in honor of Hines, a Saddleback College English professor. The program is administered by the county’s Department of Education.
