Woodbridge’s Defense Comes Through Again

ALISO VIEJO — Woodbridge used a strong defensive effort to defeat Aliso Niguel, 10-3, in a nonleague football game Thursday at Aliso Niguel High.
The Warrriors (4-0-1) held the Wolverines (1-4) to 134 yards in total offense--24 passing and 110 rushing.
Woodbridge, ranked fifth in Southern Section Division V, got a strong effort from Brandon Runk, who rushed for 106 yards in 10 carries.
But starting quarterback Scott Barlow completed only three of 15 passes for 10 yards with one interception. Backup Andy Wortman completed three of six for 22 yards.
Aliso Niguel’s starting quarterback, Jarred Hill, completed only one of five passes for four yards. He suffered a concussion late in the first half, according to Aliso Niguel Coach Joe Wood. He did not return to the game but remained on the sideline. His backup, senior Jeff Thompson, completed seven of 16 passes for 20 yards.
Woodbridge took a 7-0 lead on a seven-yard touchdown run by Owen Masserman in the first quarter, then a 10-0 lead on a 28-yard field goal by Eric Jensen with 54 seconds left in the half.
Aliso Niguel cut the lead to 10-3 on a 36-yard field goal by David Watzman with 7:07 remaining in the game.
