Senior Bobby Lee rushed for 141 yards in 18 carries, including a 70-yard touchdown run, to pace Hueneme High to a 41-14 victory over Rio Mesa in a Channel League game Friday night at Rio Mesa.
Lee also had an 83-yard touchdown reception on a pass from Jeff Garcia in the second quarter to give the Vikings (3-2, 1-1 in league play) a 14-0 lead.
Running from a modified wing-T offense, the Vikings rushed for 274 yards and five touchdowns. Sammy Ayala scored on two one-yard runs.
Rio Mesa (2-3, 0-2) scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns. Paul Ayala ran 12 yards for a touchdown to cut Hueneme’s lead to 35-6. Jay Flores closed out the scoring with a six-yard touchdown run in the final seconds.
Sammy Ayala’s second touchdown run gave Hueneme a 35-0 lead late in the third quarter. James McCowan scored on a 17-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter.
With the exception of a forfeit victory over Oxnard last season, the victory was Hueneme’s first in league play since a 52-34 victory over Rio Mesa in 1995 in which running back Ronney Jenkins ran for a national-record 619 yards.
