Washington High could not have picked a better opponent to defeat for its first victory of the season.
Quarterback Anthony West connected with tight end Travon MaGee on a 15-yard touchdown pass play with 10:53 left in the game to give the Generals a 12-10 Southern Pacific Conference upset of defending City Section 4-A champion San Pedro Friday at Washington.
The loss, San Pedro’s first since the 1995 City championship game against Dorsey, ended the Pirates’ winning streak at 18 games. San Pedro (4-1 overall, 1-1 in conference play) had been tied with Santa Ana Mater Dei for the second-longest win streak in the state.
Washington (1-4, 1-1 in conference) overcame a 10-0 halftime deficit for the victory. Danny Urquhart gained 157 yards in 18 carries for Washington, including a 78-yard run that set up the winning touchdown.
