Los Alamitos Scores an Upset in Volleyball

Bridget Merrit had six blocks as Los Alamitos upset seventh-ranked Huntington Beach, 15-6, 15-11, 16-14, in a Sunset League girls’ volleyball match Tuesday at Los Alamitos.

Los Alamitos took a 10-1 lead in the first game and used solid defense to dominate the match. The Griffins finished with 13 blocks.

Jessica Whitney and Phelan Wright each had eight kills for Los Alamitos (4-7, 3-2).

Lauren Wilson had nine kills for Huntington Beach (8-3, 2-3).

In other Sunset League girls’ volleyball:

No. 2 Marina 3, Edison 0--Lindsay Phillips had 18 kills, Katie Keating contributed nine and Ashlee Phillips had 33 assists for Marina (9-1, 5-0), which won, 15-4, 15-10, 15-4.

No. 4 Fountain Valley 3, Esperanza 1--Natalie Snowden had 12 kills for Fountain Valley, which won, 15-1, 15-11, 15-7.

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 6 Laguna Beach 3, Costa Mesa 0--Megan Smith recorded 12 kills for Laguna Beach, which won, 15-6, 15-4, 15-3. Laguna Beach is 7-1, 5-0.

In the Sea View League:

No. 3 Newport Harbor 3, Woodbridge 1--After dropping the first game, Newport Harbor rallied to defeat Woodbridge, 12-15, 15-5, 15-2, 15-7. April Ross had 15 kills for the Sailors (8-1, 5-0).

In the South Coast League:

No. 1 Mater Dei 3, San Clemente 0--Amy DeCinces had 13 kills and Megan Sabo had 12 kills for Mater Dei, which won 15-5, 15-13, 15-5. Katie Rice had 39 assists and 11 digs for the Monarchs (12-1, 5-0). Bridget Beschen had eight kills for San Clemente (4-5, 4-1).

In Century League tennis:

Canyon 9, Orange 9 (79-67 in games)--Danielle Ayres and Heather Hohenstein won their doubles sets, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1, for Canyon (3-9, 3-2). Amber Harries won, 7-5, in the deciding singles set for the Comanches.

In the Freeway League:

No. 10 Troy 18, Sonora 0--Irene Noguchi won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, and Lesley Wasser and Stacey Lee both swept their singles matches, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for Troy (12-1, 6-0), ranked sixth in Division III.

In the Garden Grove League:

Pacifica 9, La Quinta 9 (Pacifica wins on games, 75-66)--Pacifica won all the singles sets and La Quinta won all the doubles, but Lisa Chase, Sondra McNamara and Rashi Kesarwani won by larger margins in singles to secure the victory for the Mariners (11-2, 7-1).

In the Pacific Coast League:

University 10, Laguna Beach 8--Kim Woodhouse swept her singles sets, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1, for Laguna Beach (4-2 in league). University, ranked seventh in Division II, improves to 10-3, 6-0 in league.

In the Sea View League:

No. 1 Corona del Mar 16, Santa Margarita 2--Nina Vaughan swept in singles for Corona del Mar, 6-1, 6-0, 6-2. Sister Nadia Vaughan also won her three sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1. The Sea Kings remain undefeated at 13-0, 6-0.

No. 3 Woodbridge 12, Newport Harbor 6--Susanna Lingman won, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, and Danielle Hustedt won, 6-0, 6-3, 6-2, in singles for Woodbridge (11-3, 5-1), which is ranked third in Division I.

In the South Coast League:

No. 6 Mater Dei 18, San Clemente 0--Elena Klau led Mater Dei (8-4, 4-1) to a clean sweep with a 7-6, 6-1, 6-0 victory in singles.

In the Sunset League:

No. 7 Los Alamitos 15, No. 9 Esperanza 3--Shauna Brodsky swept in singles in a victory for Los Alamitos, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1. Monica Ralli and Lauren Teweles swept in doubles for the Griffins (8-4, 6-0), 6-2, 6-1, 6-0.

Emily Ackerman and Genniviv Tabago also swept in doubles for Los Alamitos, 7-5, 6-4, 6-1.

After losing to Brodsky (6-1), Kelly Six defeated her other two opponents, 6-4, 6-1. Esperanza is now 11-3, 4-2 in league.

In nonleague water polo:

Long Beach Wilson 14, No. 6 Capistrano Valley 3--Tony Azevedo scored four goals for Long Beach Wilson.

No. 10 Servite 13, Riverside Poly 11--Dane Jensen and Michael Kim each scored four goals for Servite (9-8).
