City Agrees to Annex Bonita Canyon Land
The City Council voted Monday to make Newport Beach 334 acres larger by annexing a part of Irvine called Bonita Canyon.
The Irvine Co. is about to begin building 1,500 houses and 1,000 apartments on the area bordered by MacArthur Boulevard, the San Joaquin Hills tollway and Ford Road. The Newport Beach-based developer agreed to several conditions that made the annexation more appealing to both city officials and residents.
The Irvine Co. agreed to set aside more than 30 acres for parks and a school in Bonita Village if Newport Beach annexes the area. It also said it would cut 225 homes from its plans and agreed to pay for $5.8 million in developers’ fees.
