The process for making peanut butter was patented in 1895 by Dr. John Harvey Kellogg (yes, he also developed breakfast cereals) as a health food for his patients in Battle Creek, Mich. But South American Indians were actually the first to make and eat what has become our sandwich staple.
You can learn just about anything you want to know about peanuts from the National Peanut Council, which offers a booklet titled “The Great American Peanut”, a recipe pamphlet called “Having Fun with Peanuts” and a semi-educational comic book, “The Gold Peanut.”
