The public is invited to meet the bishop of Hoima, Uganda, when he visits the Notre Dame Center in Thousand Oaks tonight.
The Right Rev. Deogratias Byabazaire will attend a reception in his honor from 7 to 10 p.m. at the center, according to Sister Lisa Megaffin. While in the area, he will visit several schools staffed by the Sisters of Notre Dame, as well as St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo.
In 1995, after the bishop asked the Sisters of Notre Dame to help start a mission in the Hoima Diocese, two Thousand Oaks nuns traveled to Uganda. They studied the region’s language, taught in the public schools and taught health and hygiene to adults, Megaffin said. A boarding school will open in the area in February.
The Notre Dame Center is at 1776 Hendrix Ave. in Thousand Oaks.
