City Decides to Give Deck Owners a Break

A dilemma over what to do with residential decks that violate city codes was remedied this week when the City Council agreed to, essentially, ignore the noncomplying structures.
Under an ordinance proposed by the council, residents on Crestview, Catalina and Surf Place will be required to get conditional use permits when new deck designs don’t meet city building and zoning codes, but existing decks will be allowed to stay without permits or inspections.
In allowing the existing decks, the council on Monday ended controversy over about six residential decks that don’t meet codes and encroach onto Hellman Ranch or Gum Grove Park property.
The council will vote on the ordinance next month.
