U.S. Geology Chief Quits Amid Criticism

Gordon Eaton, 68, who has served for the last three years as director of the U.S. Geological Survey, the lead federal agency for the study of earthquakes and volcanoes, announced he will retire Oct. 1. Eaton incurred criticism just two weeks ago from many Survey scientists based in California when he unveiled plans to close the agency’s regional center in Menlo Park and move the quake scientists elsewhere, possibly to Sacramento or Davis. Eleven members of Congress from the Bay Area have assailed the plan.
