Latino Activist Claims Abuse by INS Agents

The lawyers for Cypress Park activist Art Pulido on Tuesday called on federal prosecutors to investigate last week’s incident in which agents for the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service detained Pulido as he was about to preside over a community meeting.
Attorneys Humberto Guizar and Luis Carrillo said at a news conference that they intend to write to Assistant U.S. Atty. Michael Gennaco, the federal government’s chief civil rights lawyer in Los Angeles, to investigate. They said they also intend to write to Atty. Gen. Janet Reno to ask her to investigate “the pattern of abuse of the INS against Latinos” that they say occurs across the country.
