The event: 10th annual GTE Directories Summer Classic’s VIP gourmet luncheon, social highlight of the five-day equestrian competition. Sunday’s luncheon took place at the Huntington Central Park Equestrian Center and raised funds for the Huntington Beach Art Center.
The horsey set: About 800 guests gathered at tables set up around the picturesque obstacle course, where horses and riders competed.
While some watched the horses, others watched the people sporting equestrian chic--the women in flowing summer dresses and men in suits and the occasional hat.
“They’re dressed to the nines,” said Don Jankowiak, executive director of the Summer Classic. “This is a social event. . . . Spectators enjoy rubbing elbows in a beautiful venue.”
They also enjoyed a buffet stocked with hand-carved filet mignon and salmon with mango sauce catered by David Wilhelm’s Culinary Adventures. The event has come a long way since the first VIP luncheon 10 years ago, when guests ate fried chicken off paper plates.
Surf City meets the arts: The Huntington Beach Art Center, a partnership between the City of Huntington Beach and the center foundation, promotes contemporary art through exhibits, lectures, film, studio classes and other programs.
Projects such as outdoor festivals and a summer art camp for children bring art to the community. “We’re trying real hard to make Huntington Beach known as a city of culture--not just surf,” said Michael Mudd, event co-chairman and art center director. “People are looking for different opportunities besides recreation.”
Quote: “This event benefits children’s programs at the art center. . . . Studies prove that children exposed to the arts excel,” said Diana Casey, event co-chairwoman. “We expose them to culture.”
Faces: Dr. Gerald Chapman and Mary Warren, event co-chairs; Bill and Harriett Harris; Danny and Ginny McKenna; Judy White; David Casey; Robert Blau; Burton and Doris Willis; Joe Farley; Barbara Schultz; and Jack Rowe.
Bottom line: The Summer Classic, which included a Family Fun Day and other events, was expected to net $125,000 for art center programs.
