Councilwoman Shirley McCracken wants the City Council to consider repealing the city’s campaign-reform law that limits contributions to $1,000 a contributor for each election. “I think that the ordinance is a problem,” McCracken said. “It puts a burden on those who want to report accurately and honestly.”
She brought up the issue during council comments at last week’s meeting after attending a recent League of California Cities session where campaign laws were discussed.
The city attorney’s office will prepare alternative proposals for the council to consider at either the Jan. 26 or Feb. 2 meeting.
Last year, a political battle erupted after two council members hired a special prosecutor to file misdemeanor criminal charges against various individuals and political action committees for allegedly breaching state and city campaign contribution laws. Charges were filed against McCracken, Councilman Frank Feldhaus and Mayor Tom Daly. Daly’s case was dismissed and McCracken and Feldhaus paid fines to the city.
