Newport-Mesa Unified trustees on Tuesday unanimously approved spending $7.5 million to build an elementary school in the Newport Coast development. It will be the first school built from scratch in the district since Andersen Elementary was completed in the 1970s. Officials say a groundbreaking ceremony is planned for later this summer. The school is set to open in the fall of 2000.
Construction money will come from Mello-Roos funds and developer fees, said Mike Fine, the district’s assistant superintendent for business and financial services. Mello-Roos funds are development fees ultimately paid for by homeowners.
The Irvine Co., which is building the Newport Coast development, has done extensive landscaping work at the school site, Fine said. L.A. Contractors, based in Los Angeles, will build the school.
