Rupert the swan, a longtime city fixture, was rescued from the ocean Wednesday after being snared by a fishing hook. The Newport Harbor Patrol pulled the black swan out of the water after residents reported he had a fishing hook in his neck, Sgt. Ron Peoples said. Rupert, fed regularly by residents and business owners who consider him the unofficial city mascot, was treated by Newport Beach Animal Control and returned to the harbor, Peoples said.
