A man reported to be the Florida leader of the white supremacist World Church of the Creator has been found guilty of a racially motivated hate crime for beating and kicking a Cuban American.

An all-white jury in Broward County found Jules Fettu guilty of battery as a hate crime late Wednesday for beating and kicking William Salas, 42, when Salas tried to protect his 17-year-old son from being attacked by skinheads during a concert.

The six-member jury acquitted Fettu of the more serious crime of aggravated battery on Salas’ son Jesiah.

Jesiah Salas was beaten unconscious during the rock concert in 1997 and had to have stitches in his ear and mouth. His father was severely bruised.

Fettu, 26, was described by the Miami Herald as the Florida leader of the World Church of the Creator, an Illinois-based supremacist group that gained notoriety earlier this month when a former member, Benjamin Nathaniel Smith, killed two people and wounded nine in a shooting rampage in Illinois and Indiana.
