Kids Jump at Chance for Junior Olympics

Kids played a sort of hooky from Glenwood Elementary School late last week. It’s called the Junior Olympics.

The PTA-organized event, now in its 10th year, allowed 250 students to participate in eight field activities in the morning and four track events in the afternoon. Students in kindergarten through third grade competed Thursday; Friday was for fourth- through sixth-graders.

“It’s a really fun day. They look forward to it,” said organizer Cindy Escobar.

Field activities included competition in sit-ups and push-ups, an obstacle course, softball throw, basketball dribble, basketball hoop shoot, soccer dribble, and standing long jump. Track events included the 50-, 100- and 200-yard dashes and a relay race.

“The kids love it,” said Jane Clancy, the school’s physical-education specialist, adding that it gives students who don’t always perform well in the classroom a chance to show their stuff on the field.

Some students just enjoyed the event for the obvious reason.

“I liked today because I missed math,” fifth-grader Joseph Navarro said.
