A natural gas leak forced residents from their homes late Wednesday morning and closed a stretch of Golden West Street for nearly five hours, authorities said. Police and fire units were called to the 19000 block of Golden West at 10:53 a.m., and firefighters evacuated 20 homes until Southern California Gas Co. crews contained the leak from a broken 6-inch pipe. Officers closed Golden West from Garfield Avenue to Ellis Avenue. The street was reopened at 3 p.m. and residents were allowed to return home.
