AROUND THE NHL

Dave Taylor, the Kings’ senior vice president and general manager, talked with New York Islander executive Mike Milbury again Friday, and both fought a deadline in their continued efforts to forge a deal that would get winger Ziggy Palffy to the Kings.
Such a deal would have to satisfy NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman that New York is not conducting a fire sale.
One problem in making a deal is timing, because a trade freeze will go into effect at 2 p.m. PDT Sunday if the Stars win the Stanley Cup tonight. A thaw will not come until the expansion draft, on Friday, and to make any sense, the deal would have to be done before next Saturday’s entry draft.
As it stands, the Kings would give up defenseman Mathieu Biron, center Scott Barney, winger Josh Green, winger Jason Podollan and their first-round draft choice for Palffy, winger Mike Watt, goalie Marcel Cousineau and center Bryan Smolinski, an unsigned restricted free agent.
