Interlopers Try to Continue Trend

Four of six Winston West races this year have been won by outsiders from other NASCAR series and tonight’s $107,000 Irwindale 250 at Irwindale Speedway may follow that pattern.
Mike Wallace, a former Winston Cup driver who is a regular on the Craftsman Truck series, will be in the same Ford that he won with in Phoenix and Pikes Peak. Ron Hornaday Jr., a familiar name to Southern California fans from his days at Saugus Speedway, is the Craftsman Truck series champion. He will drive a Pontiac tonight.
Only 29 points separate the first four drivers in Winston West standings and tonight’s 125-mile race could shuffle the points. The leaders are Mike Chase, Sean Woodside and Austin Cameron in Chevrolets and Brandon Ash in a Ford.
Woodside and Butch Gulliland, who won at Bakersfield two weeks ago, are the only Winston West regulars to have won this season.
