Olivas Fiesta Arrives Sunday

Storytelling, music, food and a reenactment of frontier justice will be part of Olivas Fiesta Ole! Sunday at the Olivas Adobe in Ventura.
A set depicting a Gold Rush boomtown will be erected on the grounds of the adobe, and several volunteers will stage a skit about a corrupt mayor, an honest widow and an unlucky man who knows a lot about mining.
“We let the visitors act as the jury and presented a number of cases,” historian Richard Senate said of last year’s show. “At one point, they even wanted to hang me.”
The daylong event will include tours of the Olivas Adobe, and visitors will be able to learn through presentations by the Olivas Herb Garden Committee about how plants were used in the Old West. Julie Tumamait-Stenslie will sing and tell stories to describe her Chumash heritage. The Ojai native can trace her ancestry back eight generations in Ventura County.
Also scheduled as part of the celebration: bluegrass music, a classic guitarist, folk dancers and a juggler.
Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children and seniors. The adobe is at 4200 Olivas Park Drive. For more information, call Senate at 658-4728.
